  • Organizing and developing market for silk goods and handicrafts within or outside the state and abroad

The PBRSSM Ltd has at present 7(seven) retail outlets of which 5(five) are in Kolkata and 2(two) in the districts at Barasat and Durgapur.

Structure of the organization

Of the 16(sixteen) Primary Cooperative Societies, representatives of 6(six) are elected as Board Directors. The Director of Textiles (Sericulture) has been nominated to function as the Chairman of the Board of Directors. The other Government nominees are:

Functions of the Organization

The organization procures Silk, Matka, Tasar raw materials (kora thans) from Primary Cooperative Societies/ other enlisted societies. The fabric is then printed by enlisted printers. Self help groups are also engaged for embroidery works on Tasar, dyed silk. Also, Garad and Baluchari sarees are procured from primary cooperative societies and sold in the showrooms of PBRSSM Ltd.

Policy Changes

A few policy changes were effected from 2010-11 to increase sales and generate customer awareness. They were:

  • Launching advertisement campaign through a reputed ad agency in television and print media/ Outdoor campaigns through hoardings
  • Participation in exhibitions in metros organized by the Silk Mark Organization of India
  • Emerging out from age old designs/ prints and taking professional help for designing and printing

The policy changes have paid off. The ad campaign through the popular Bengali women’s magazine, “Sananda” has invited queries and positive feedbacks from customers across the country. A new logo has been launched which is trendy and effective.

Indeed, in the 2(two) successive exhibitions held in Kolkata in 2011 and 2012,   organized by the Silk Mark Organisation of India (A wing of the Central Silk Board, Government ofIndia), this organization emerged as the highest seller. In 2012, the stall of the PBRSSM Ltd was adjudged as the “Best Pavilion”.

The ball has just been set rolling to take PBRSSM on to the next level. At present all our showrooms have Credit card facilities and are managed by young and energetic sales persons. This brand, which was practically unheard of until recently, has compelled other big players in the market to sit up and take notice.

And…..the way forward:

We plan to undertake the following tasks in 2012-13 to realize our goals:

  • Change the look of the showrooms to make them more attractive. A total image makeover is necessary
  • Computerization of all showrooms and Head Office for better inventory/accounts management
  • Preparation of web-site and e-catalogue to promote sales
  • Aggressive ad campaign to make the brand visible
